Kowhai—Term 3

Welcome back to School! We hope you have had a relaxing break and have come back eager to learn.

English

The writing focus for this term is recount and persuasive writing.  In our writing we are learning to use persuasive language to persuade an audience to attend our school production.  We will also be recounting events that occur at school.  We are still learning to self edit.  This is where we can self correct spelling and punctuation errors.  This term we will be using a buddy system to help us edit our writing.

We will be using the writing process to engage ourselves in writing.  There are many steps to this process, planning, writing, proof-reading, peer conferencing, editing, conferencing with the teacher and publishing.  All these steps will be modelled enabling the children to become more abled writers.

Spelling

This term we will continue to work our way through the Stage 7 of the Yolanda Soryl Phonics Programme.

Reading
The reading programme this term will continue as it did last term. This term comprehension is a focus in Kowhai.  Comprehension means understanding what we read.  Each day the children will participate in a comprehension
activity related to the story that they have read.   We will continue to focus on reading with, reading to and reading by to extend our reading knowledge.  Each night the children will be given a book to share with their parents, caregiver or a family member.  You can help your child read by listening, helping with
mistakes and asking questions about what they have just read.

Maths

In maths we will change the focus to addition and subtraction.  Although the focus has changed the children still need to practice and increase the speed of their basic facts.  Two days a week we will be teaching the strand work related to geometry which will have a focus of position and orientation.  The other strand that is being taught this term is measurement with an emphasis on time.  Each night the children should be practising their basic facts.  It would be good if these could be timed.  The children know what set of times tables they should be learning.

Rich Concepts

In Rich Concepts we will be looking at The Arts.  This term Kowhai will be involved in the school production of Pirates and Mermaids.  This will include designing costumes and choreographing a dance or piece of movement.

In Physical Education this term we are exploring three different ways to keep our selves fit and healthy.

Week 1-3      Ball skills: passing and throwing

Week 4-6           Te Reo Kori Poi

    Week 7-10         Skipping

For visual Art we will be partaking in a variety of projects that will help us develop skills in painting, using crayon an dye, and drawing.  We will be using different artistic tools to complete our wearable art piece.

Maori
In Te Reo Maori the children in Kowhai will be learning kupu, or words, plus some phrases and sentences related to Hakinakina or sport.  We will also be reading some Maori Myths and Legends.

BYOD—Bring Your Own Devices
The BYOD paperwork has now been completed and approved by the Board of Trustees.  Once the parental consent has been signed and returned to school the children can bring their devices to school to assist them with their learning.  Devices are being used more and more in our learning so it would be beneficial if your child could bring one to school, if they have access to one.

Remember we have an open door policy where anyone, parents, caregivers and friends can come and visit classrooms.  If you have any enquiries about your child’s education or the activities happening in the classroom please don’t hesitate to contact us through the school office.

Warm Regards

Lorna Meade & Shona Standish
